Monitoring the 2026 fuel crisis

Welcome

This page is just a one-stop shop for a few charts I find myself regularly updating in keeping track of the fuel crisis associated with the war in Iran, complicated by possible expansion to the Red Sea, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

USA oil stocks

This plot of total crude oil in the USA is updated weekly from the US Energy Information Agency and is a good indicator (I think) of “just how bad is this really”. Long before it reaches the red line there should be market and political chaos, but I suspect the system will physically keep going.

I also have a zoom-in on just the period from January 2025 onwards of the same chart:

Many experts have wrote in the first few months of the war that if the facility at Cushing got below 20 million barrels the US markets would freeze up. That turned out to be wrong, but there must be some number, lower than 20 million but perhaps not much below it, that really does cause a problem:

I also want to monitor US stocks of crude other than the Strategic Petroleum Reserve; and key refined products. Not for any nuance, but just to check for any big eye-watering trends.

Other impacts

Still to come
